What is a domain name and how to order one?

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a unique address on the internet that allows people to easily access websites without having to remember a complex series of numbers known as an IP address. It's essentially the name of your website that users type into their web browser's address bar to visit your site. Domain names are managed by the Domain Name System (DNS), which translates them into IP addresses that computers use to locate each other on the internet.

Domain names are composed of two main elements:

Second-level Domain (SLD): This is the unique part of the domain that you choose, representing your brand or the purpose of your website (e.g., google in google.com).
Top-level Domain (TLD): This is the suffix or extension attached to domain names, such as .com, .net, .org, and many more, indicating the domain's purpose or geographic area.

How to Order a Domain Name through the Client Area

You can check the availability of a domain name through the client area by following the steps below or simply by visiting the domains page here.

Step 1: Access the Client Area

First, you need to log in to the Client Area. You will need to login with the username and password you used to register. If you have not registered an account yet, you can register one here

Step 2: Navigate to Domain Registration

Once logged in, hover over the domains icon on the left and click on Register a New Domain.

Step 3: Search for Your Desired Domain Name

Enter the domain name you wish to register in the search bar to check its availability. A search will be conducted to determine whether the domain name is available for registration. If it's available, you can proceed; if not, you may need to try alternative names or TLDs.

Step 4: Choose Your Domain Options

After finding an available domain, you'll have options to select such as the registration period (usually 1-10 years) and whether you want to add domain privacy protection, which keeps your personal information hidden from the public WHOIS database.

Step 5: Add to Cart and Checkout

Once you've selected your options, add the domain to your cart and proceed to checkout. You will then be presented with the default nameservers for your domain. We suggest leaving these as default if you intend hosting with VE.Host.

Step 6: Complete Your Purchase

During checkout, you'll be asked to provide or confirm your contact information, choose a payment method, and agree to the terms and conditions. Complete the purchase by making the payment.

Step 7: Domain Configuration

After purchasing, you may need to configure your domain settings, such as updating DNS settings or setting up email forwarding. This can usually be done within the Client Area under the "Domains" section.

Step 8: Confirmation and Activation

Once your domain is registered and configured, you should receive a confirmation email. The domain may take up to 48 hours to become fully active due to DNS propagation.

Conclusion

Registering a domain name through the Client Area is a straightforward process that enables individuals and businesses to secure their unique presence on the internet. By following the steps outlined above, you can easily order and configure your domain name, setting the foundation for establishing your online identity.
